Thousands of animals and birds are injured annually
by dogs, cats, cars, lawnmowers and children.
Here are a few tips on how to help wildlife by avoiding HARM to them
It is a dog or cat's natural inclination to chase and play wsith wild things that move. Please keep your dog leashed and/or supervised and your cats indoors.
Before mowing your lawn, take a few minutes to walk through the area to look for bunny nests (slight indentation-type nests in the grass) or ground-nesting birds. DON'T move the nest! Leave a 3-4 foot diameter area and mow AROUND.
Before trimmimg tree branches or cutting down trees and large shrubs, check for nests in the branches or in cavities. If dead trees are posing no safety hazards, leave them, as they provide natural homes for myriad wildlife.
Place secure covers over window wells and caps over chimneys and vents - this will avoid birds and mammals from falling and getting trapped or from deliberately taking up residence to nest.
Please attempt to retrieve snapped fishing lines and lures, and discard plastic bags, worm containers, etc. in appropriate refuse receptacles. Kite string should not be left lying about or remain entangled in trees.
Be alert and observant while driving. Animals dart out from the side of the road, as children do. Neither animals nor young children recognize the danger and speed of oncoming vehicles. They either cannot get out of the way fast enough or "freeze" from fright and panic. Large birds such as crows or hawks may be in the road feeding on roadkill; please honk and slow down to give them time to get out of the way. Ideally, if you can safely pull to the side, put on the pair of disposable gloves you should keep in your glovebox or console, pick up the roadkill, and place it 2-3 feet from the side of the road. After you've left, the bird can return to its meal without fear of getting hit and killed.
Do not attempt to keep or raise orphaned wildlife. It is illegal unless you are trained and licensed. Wild animals do NOT make good pets. They are NOT domestic, like cats and dogs.
